Why
?
For many gay. lesbian,
bisexual, transgender and questioning young people declaring their sexuality is empowering and liberating - and
the start of a happy and successful life with the support of their family and
friends - we want to support all gay, lesbian, bi-sexual, transgender or unsure young
people to be
in this position.
However for some young
people coming to terms with and declaring their sexuality and then coming out can
be difficult, confusing and stressful.
They may feel alone,
or depressed and think they are the only teenager feeling like this and there
are no other gay, lesbian, bi-sexual or transgender young people for them talk to.
Through our
work we have met some gay,
lesbian, bi-sexual or transgender young people who are confident with their sexuality and have been
able to come out to family and friends easily.
We have also worked with gay, lesbian, bi-sexual or transgender young
people who have not
had the support of family and friends and who have had difficult times
in identifying and being accepted as themselves.
Many of these
young people said they would have welcomed the chance to meet and be
friends with other young people who were going through or had gone through
similar experiences as themselves - or had the opportunity to meet a
youth worker who could support them individually.
Outreach youth was set up
to meet this need and is
able to support you at whatever level you wish - in your family, school,
workplace or circle of friends and can
work with you individually, in small and large groups.
